Volunteer tax

The state requires paying taxes on volunteering

Institute for Economic Leadership

According to the logic of officials, volunteers must pay 18% personal income tax and 1.5% military duty. An exception is the charitable purchase of goods and services from the list, which was approved back in 2016. As the volunteers note, 90% of what the military needs is not on the list. For example, there is tomato juice, but no drones, anti-drone guns, UAV remotes, etc.

The volunteers appealed to the officials with a proposal to change the resolution with one line, something like this: “All property transferred to the military on a volunteer basis is not taxed.”

However, according to the volunteers, the Ministry of Finance initially blocked this proposal.

“We pay taxes from the salary. Since the state has not fulfilled its function of protection, we are forced to volunteer. We give our own money to a volunteer who collects charity aid. But from these funds, he is forced to pay tax to the budget again – for the third time,” wrote Maria Berlinska, a volunteer and head of the “Air Intelligence Support Center”.

After widespread publicity, the Ministry of Finance reacted and promised to make changes to the resolution. We are monitoring the situation and hope that officials will not create bureaucratic obstacles for the work of volunteers.
